The Pulham Orchestra...
Why not join in?
...was founded in 1983 by Dr Pat Rawlence and Musical Director Margery Baker to give local players, under the direction of a professional conductor, an opportunity to enjoy music together while exploring a varied orchestral repertoire.
Support and guidance are given to inexperienced players.
The orchestra takes part in a range of activities:
Rehearsals |
| Regular rehearsals are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, throughout the year, at Pulham Market. Rehearsals are normally held in the Memorial Hall on the Village Green. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; the emphasis on fun and enjoyment as well as learning. The orchestra (often referred to as "the PVO") has a current membership of over 30 players. Support and guidance are given to those less experienced or confident. (Rehearsals) |

Performances |
The orchestra arranges and takes part in performances - normally three or four a year - at venues in Norfolk and Suffolk. These serve as a focus for the Tuesday afternoon rehearsals though to take part in performances is not obligatory. The repertoire is wide and includes music commissioned by the PVO and written especially for it. (Forthcoming concerts)

Collaboration |
| Very successful collaborative ventures have been undertaken in the recent past with members of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and with The Wymondham Youth Orchestra. The PVO is a member of MAKING MUSIC (the National Federation of Music Societies). A year with composer-in-residence TOM ARMSTRONG and in partnership with the Wymondham Youth Orchestra was funded by Making Music... a highly successful venture resulting in a composition called 'BOUNCE'. The Pulham Orchestra works also with schools and other societies. It has recently completed a two year collaboration with members of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. (Further details) |

Fringe Evenings |
... are open rehearsals, held when there is a fifth Tuesday in the month, at 7.30 pm in the Primary School. Non-members are very welcome to come and play with us but please contact John Herschel-Shorland in advance so that music can be made available for you. There is a small fee payable on each fringe evening. (The next fringe evening)

Biennial Workshops |
| Every second year the orchestra hosts and takes part in a workshop weekend (from Friday to Sunday) at the end of October based in Pulham Market. This is a chance to tackle more ambitious works with the help of professional instrumental tutors and a guest conductor. These weekend workshops are open to members and non-members of all ages and have proved very popular. The beautiful surroundings of the village add to the enjoyment of the weekend. (Workshop 2008) |
